Effectively Delivering Group Tutorials

Intended audience:
Personal and Group Tutors, Tutorial Co-ordinators and Lead Tutors. It is also useful for Student Services and Learning Support Managers with responsibility for group tutorials.
Focus:
Most colleges provide effective one to one support for individual students. However many colleges also provide group tutorials for their students. Group tutorials can be an effective way of helping students to achieve, however where tutorials are not delivered well students fail to attend and question the relevance of the tutorial. Some tutors find it a challenge to deliver appropriate and relevant group tutorial sessions for the full academic year.
This event will explore the key skills and strategies for improving the delivery of group tutorials. Tutors will consider how to develop useful materials for tutorial use and how to balance the content element of the tutorial with the need to encourage the tutorial process and student involvement.
Participants will also have the opportunity to examine the Matrix tutorial activities resource pack, 'Our 96 Top Tutorial Activities'.

- Identify the skills required for effective delivery of group tutorials
- Explore ways of managing the tutorial time effectively
- Examine materials for use in the group tutorial
- Discuss ways of evaluating and improving the group tutorial
