Location: Bewleys Hotel, Manchester Airport

Intended audience:

Personal Tutors, Tutorial Managers, Senior Tutors, Advanced Practitioners and Teachers in all curriculum areas wishing to improve the success of their students. Guidance staff will also find this event helpful.

Focus:

Colleges are under constant pressure to improve student achievement. A key factor in a student’s success is their motivation levels at any given time. Many of our students appear de-motivated and student motivation fluctuates greatly over their course of study. However, student motivation can be improved by ensuring that the key factors necessary for success are in place.

Many of the factors affecting the student’s motivation are beyond our influence and control. However, there is much that we can do. This event examines the key factors in motivation, and identifies the ways in which the college, and in particular, key staff, can contribute to student motivation.

The programme will help you identify the main factors which contribute to the student’s level of motivation, and will provide a range of practical strategies to improve motivation. The helpful resource pack will also provide evidence of research conducted in this area, successful strategies and actions used in other colleges, and include a detailed case study of one college’s attempt to track the motivational levels of its students on a week by week basis.

Purpose:

During this event you will:

  • Identify what is meant by motivation
  • Examine the relationship between motivation, compliance and performance
  • Use a 6-step framework for diagnosing and addressing a student’s motivational level
  • Identify the key factors which most affect the student’s motivation
  • Develop policies, strategies, actions & behaviours which positively affect these key factors
  • Have the opportunity to review and discuss good practice used elsewhere
