Identifying and Screening for Students with Specific Learning Difficulties

Date: 28 Apr 2010 (1 day)

Location: Bewleys Hotel, Manchester Airport

Publicity: Download publicity & programme (PDF)

Intended audience:

Foundation Managers, SLDD Managers & Co-ordinators, Learning Support Managers, Skills for Life Managers and Curriculum/Programme Managers and Tutors in all subjects.

Focus:

College staff are increasingly aware of the need to adopt effective teaching strategies for students with learning differences such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD. However, the first hurdle to overcome is to identify as early as possible those students who need additional support so that appropriate action can be taken. Failure to do so impacts on college funding and on the statutory duty to make reasonable adjustments for learners.

This event is a response to requests from college staff for easy to use and effective screening materials. Checklists are a good start, but where do you go from there? Subject specialists need materials that work in their curriculum area.

Jo Todd, one of the country’s leading experts in SLDD guides you through the full range of materials available and provides practical help in deciding what to use and when to the benefit of the student and staff.

Purpose:

During this event you will:

  • Consider how students with specific learning difficulty are to be identified
  • Explore what checklists are available for identifying specific learning difficulty
  • Critically appraise and evaluate the effectiveness and validity of checklists and tests
  • Look at subject specific screening tests
  • Understand the role of specialists in the identification process
  • Identify the steps required to develop a whole-college policy on screening of students
  • Discuss what happens after a student has been identified as needing further assessment
