Making Theory Lessons More Active
Teaching Strategies to Stimulate and Improve Learning
Intended audience:
Curriculum Managers, Heads of Faculty & Department. Programme Leaders and Managers, Teachers and Lecturers in all Academic, Vocational and Non-Vocational programme areas.
Focus:
Practical lessons in vocational areas regularly achieve better grades at inspection than do theory lessons. The traditionally text-based, passive nature of this side of the curriculum fails to involve many learners and as a result students lose interest and achievement is poor. It is now, more than ever, necessary to engage, stimulate, challenge and motivate our students if they are to stay on course and be successful.
During this event, we will look at recent initiatives in student-centred, active learning which can help us to transform even the dullest theory sessions into lessons which will interest and motivate learners; even better, which will get them thinking independently and making sense of the subject for themselves. With these ideas, you can transform this aspect of your curriculum, help learners to achieve better results, and actually save time in your teaching.
As well as paper-based resources, there are templates and resources in various e-learning formats which will increase your toolkit of strategies for involving learners in their learning.
Purpose:
During this event you will:
- consider the teaching principles which underlie effective, active learning
- trial and evaluate a range of active learning resources, and consider how these approaches might work in your lessons
- explore a number of options for more effective use of groupwork and questioning strategies
- begin to design activities for immediate use in your classes
