How to Improve Group Tutorials through Observation
Intended audience:
Tutorial Managers, Quality Improvement Managers, Senior and Lead Tutors, Programme Area Managers and Professional Development Managers.
Focus:
Many Colleges have introduced observation of group tutorials as part of their quality improvement processes. For the observation process to be effective and of benefit to staff, students and the college, everyone must be clear about what constitutes a good group tutorial in the first instance. In addition, the criteria for observation needs careful consideration as the nature and purpose of group tutorials differ from a classroom lesson in some fundamental ways.
This programme gives you an opportunity to explore the rationale for group tutorials and what constitutes excellence in group tutorials. It enables you to identify the criteria for observation and provides practical strategies for introducing observation and engaging staff and students in the process.
The course leaders are; Christine Rose and Kate Benson, who are nationally recognised trainers in tutorial support and quality improvement.
Purpose:
During this event you will:
- explore what constitutes good practice in group tutorials
- identify appropriate criteria for group tutorial observation
- develop tutorial observation criteria and checklists
- distinguish between flexibility in the group tutorial and lack of direction
- explore ways to effectively use outcomes of observation to improve the learner experience
A full set of course materials will be provided for delegates to use in their own institutions.
