Active methods: the Standards Unit – and beyond

Focus:
The national spotlight is very much on Mathematics teaching. The newly-created National Centre of Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NECTM) and the Standards Unit “boxes” are measures of government concern about mathematical learning in the UK. Inspectors continue to identify the need for improvement, particularly in such areas as: variety and appropriateness of learning activities; active involvement of learners; checking of learning and meeting individual needs.
This event will provide practical strategies and activities to enable teaching staff in Mathematics to make immediate improvements to their planning and teaching. We will look at ways to make learning more effective without increasing workload – working smarter not harder.

- explore what makes learning effective in maths lessons
- try out a range of practical activities which you can use in your teaching identify ways in which you can improve and refine your own teaching
