Creating Expert Learners
How to encourage self managed, self confident, self motivated students
Intended audience:
Curriculum Managers, Programme Leaders, Teachers, Advanced Practitioners, Lecturers and Support Staff keen to promote self managed learning.
Focus:
The DfES White Paper: 'Raising Skills, Improving Life Chances' describes how learning will be more personalised and how teaching and learning will be more tailored to individual needs.
There is strong evidence that knowing how to learn has a positive impact on retention, achievement and a learner’s attitude to learning. We need to support learners to develop a range of learning styles in order to get the most out of their programmes and to take responsibility for managing their own learning. The White paper states, "we want all students to become ‘expert learners’." As the variety of learners on our programmes continues to diversify, it is becoming increasingly important to consider how we can support students to become expert learners.
This one-day programme will give individuals the opportunity to investigate possible approaches to these issues. It will encourage a more self managed, self-confident, self-motivated approach to learning, based on knowledge and understanding of ‘How I Learn’.
Purpose:
During this event you will:
- Identify the characteristics of ‘expert learners’ and the skills that are required to become one
- Acknowledge “the self” in learning
- Explore factors that interfere with successful learning and so recognise the conditions that are necessary to promote learning
- Recognise and understand various learning and thinking styles
- Develop and utilise strategies that suit individual preferred learning styles
- Consider a range of approaches to build specific learning skills including strategies for memory, working with and processing information
- Assemble a model for self managed learning
