Confidentiality, Counselling, The College and the Law
Child Protection and Data Protection Legislation
Intended audience:
College Counsellors, Managers of Student Services, College Legal Advisers and Assistant Principals with responsibility for student affairs.
Focus:
The Children Act and recent changes in the Data Protection Act have wide reaching implications for College Student Services and Counselling Services in particular. Colleges must adopt guidelines for Child Protection for students under 18 years old. Some colleges have already done so but the guidelines adopted may conflict with the professional status and ethics of counsellors working in a college environment. The Expansion of Data Protection legislation means college services must think carefully about how they keep information about clients. They must ensure that all staff are aware of the policies and practices adopted.
This event will provide Student Service Managers and Counsellors with an opportunity to examine the implications of these changes for their services with expert speakers in the field of confidentiality, counselling and the law.
Purpose:
During this event you will:
- Understand the current situation relating to Child Protection and confidentiality for Counsellors
- Examine changes to the Data Protection Act 1998 and their implications for services
- Identify examples of good practice in these areas
- Explore ways to respond to confidentiality questions in the college situation
