How to Manage & Plan Group Tutorials

Intended audience:

Tutorial Managers, Co-ordinators and Lead Tutors, Student Services Managers, Learning Support Managers and all staff with responsibility for Group Tutorials.

Focus:

The majority of tutorial systems have a group tutorial element. Although most tutors provide good one to one feedback to students, the group time is often seen by both tutors and students as being ineffective. Where group tutorial time is not used well, students often vote with their feet. Initiatives such as ‘Every Child Matters’ and Citizenship mean that it is vital that staff use the group time wisely and effectively.

This event examines the organisation, planning and content of group tutorial programmes. It provides you with an opportunity to address the requirements of group tutorials from the college and students point of view. You will explore a unique model for designing and planning tutorials and examine examples of programmes that meet the needs of different groups of students, drawing out the key features for success.

NB: For help with group tutorial skills and materials development we recommend our - 'Effectively Delivering Group Tutorials' programme.

Participants will also have the opportunity to examine the Matrix tutorial activities resource pack, 'Our 96 Top Tutorial Activities'. In the meantime you can request 'Plus5' a free add on pack and sampler from our website.

Purpose:

During this event you will:

  • Identify the key features of a successful group tutorial programme
  • Examine what students want from their tutorial programme
  • Explore a unique model for planning the process
  • Consider examples of programmes currently in use
  • Improve the design and content of your own programme

A full set of course materials will be provided for delegates to use in their own institutions.
