Developing Classroom Materials to Meet Individual Student Needs

Intended audience:

Curriculum Managers, Heads of Faculty, Programme Managers & Leaders, Learning Support Managers and Staff Teachers & Lecturers

Focus:

As teachers and support staff we are faced every day in our classrooms with an ever-widening range of students: students who differ in their experience, ability, motivation, background, culture and gender – to name but a few individual attributes.

Basic design principles which take into account the range of student need, can help us to produce
classroom materials which are accessible to all. As well as considering these principles, this event will focus on the needs of the individual and how we can meet these. We will consider what types of resources we might use in the classroom / workshop to make lessons both sensitive and inclusive. We will look at the needs of students from different backgrounds and circumstances, including those for whom English is a second language, those who are dyslexic, deaf, hearing or visually impaired.

"We need to make it possible for all students to participate in education and training by making lessons accessible to all."

Purpose:

During this event you will:

  • Explore what makes learning effective
  • Consider best practice in inclusivity and equal opportunities, in relation to materials design
  • Discuss and try out a range of approaches for active reading, getting students writing, and
    checking learning
  • Explore ways of improving our own teaching without overburdening our workload

A full set of course materials will be provided for delegates to use in their own institutions.
