Managing from the Middle - North East Regional Event
Being Effective and Staying Sane!

Intended audience:

Programme Managers, Team Leaders, Co-ordinators, Curriculum and Cross College Managers in FE and 6th Form Colleges

Focus:

One of the most difficult roles managers face is ‘being in the middle’: finding the right balance between, on the one hand, managing people who once were your team colleagues, and representing their (and your) views upwards and, on the other hand, ensuring College and senior management initiatives are fully accepted and supported by your team.

There is a third dimension to this role: working effectively as a manager with others, whose co-operation you need, but over whom you have no management control.

This event looks specifically at this difficult role. It will identify typical difficulties and conflicting pressures, and suggest practical strategies and approaches to resolve these difficulties in a positive and professional way – and thereby help you keep your sanity!

The course trainer is Arnie Skelton. Arnie is a nationally recognised trainer with a proven track record of success in training Managers in FE and 6th Form Colleges.

Purpose:

During this event you will:

  • clarify your role, in terms of expectations legitimately placed on you from above and below.
  • identify the particular stresses and tensions of managing from the middle
  • use a range of practical strategies to address these tensions in a constructive and professional manner
  • learn how to create positive influence, so that you are more effective in influencing those you do not manage

A full set of course materials will be provided for delegates to use in their own institutions.
