Motivational Interviewing - North East Regional Event
Getting Students Back on Track

Intended audience:

Counsellors, Mentors, Tutors, Guidance and Support staff working with the most challenging and at risk students.

Focus:

Many young people in colleges experience serious difficulties with their behaviour. They have habits and patterns of behaviour that hinder their ability to achieve at college. They can often appear resistant to perceived authority and are pushing at boundaries.

This resistance can mean that they are least able to receive help at the time when they are most in need of it. The efforts we put into trying to turn this resistance into compliance is not only draining in time and energy but also exacerbates the situation.

Motivational interviewing is a tried and tested approach that channels student’s resistance in the direction of positive changes that they want for themselves.

This event provides you with the opportunity to learn to utilise Motivational Interviewing techniques to help bring students back on track and engage with their learning through a mixture of theory and practical activities.

Motivational Interviewing is a directive, person centred helping approach that guides people in the direction of the positive changes that they want to make through the exploration and resolution of ambivalence and the reorienting of motivation, (the energy that gets things done).

Purpose:

During this event you will:

  • understand the principles of Motivational Interviewing
  • learn simple techniques that;
  1. help people raise their awareness of the dilemmas that face them
  2. overcome obstacles to change
    make positive changes
  3. build powerful systems of motivation that propel them both away from what they don’t want and towards what they do want
  • recognise, understand and respond to dilemmas and ambivalence
  • help people to channel their energies in a direction that benefits them
