Peer Mentoring - A Programme for Trainers
Helping you to help them develop as peer mentors

Intended audience:

Everyone who has the responsibility for training peer mentors and for those who co-ordinate peer mentoring schemes.  This programme includes a resource pack of training materials that can be used to form the basis of your training sessions.

Focus:

Peer Mentoring is a successful route to supporting learners at all levels.  It is instrumental in promoting retention and achievement and empowers individuals to understand themselves better and develop their skills in learning, life and work.  Those who take on the role of mentor equally benefit from the process as they develop a range of skills that enable them to work with others.  Through a clearer understanding of their own interpersonal and intrapersonal skills they too develop skills for lifelong learning.

This programme’s trainer, Julie Olsson, has an extensive background in secondary and FE education with all levels of learners.  She delivers peer mentoring training to students in FE and sixth form colleges.

This programme will allow you to participate in the key elements of the training programme and provide you with resources, activities and a framework that can be tailored to your specific peer mentoring programmes.

Purpose:

During this event you will:

Develop ways to work with your peer mentors to:

  • investigate what is meant by 'Mentoring'
  • explore the skills needed by mentors – Listening, Questioning, Rapport, understanding body language
  • assess effectiveness in utilising these skills and consider how these can be developed
  • understand how own attitudes, values and beliefs can affect how we judge others and how it is important to be non-judgemental and open-minded
  • use the resource materials provided for peer mentor training

A full set of course materials will be provided for delegates to use in their own organisation.
