Developing Effective Writing Skills in the ESOL Classroom

Intended audience:

New and Experienced ESOL Teachers and Learning Support Staff working in FE, the workplace and community contexts.

Focus:

Language learners wanting to progress to work or further study need to develop both fluency and accuracy in the four language skills, in order to meet the demands of employers and awarding bodies.

As language learners move from elementary to intermediate level, the focus of study shifts from an emphasis on oral and reading skills, to developing the complex skills needed for writing.

This event introduces a range of innovative and effective strategies for developing writing skills in the ESOL classroom, using a range of engaging and readily available resources.

Purpose:

During this event you will:

  • Investigate constructivist teaching strategies in the ESOL classroom

  • Examine how reading, speaking and listening skills are linked to the writing process

  • Use story bags, recipes and games as tools for language work

  • Explore strategies for providing differentiated support for writing

  • Try out interactive games to teach punctuation and grammar
